Some reporters covering crime, police, or revenue beats use their influence and connections to earn unofficial income by suppressing, altering, or exaggerating news. This practice is commonly known as "envelope journalism" or "patronage."
Sometimes, misuse of the "Press Club Card" leads journalists to act as facilitators or middlemen, handling personal or others' tasks in return for commissions or fees.
Some journalists also unofficially do PR work for organizations or individuals, helping maintain positive images or suppress negative news, and get paid for it.
My question to Pakistani journalists is: how do they afford a lavish lifestyle on a salary of just 30–40 thousand rupees?
Freedom of press and journalistic accountability should go hand in hand. If a journalist is proven guilty of bribery, strict action should be taken, but law enforcement must avoid illegal, inhuman, or vindictive actions.
According to Supreme Court rulings and police codes, no suspect should be treated this way. Such acts are examples of misuse of law enforcement authority.
