Spiritual Marketing and Cosmic Realities: The Myth of Multan’s "Shams" and the Sun
By: Honey Bin Tariq
In our society, fabricated stories attributed to saints have become "lucrative products" for shrines and their custodians. One of the most prominent of these "products" is the tale of the "Meat and the Sun" in Multan, sold for centuries as a grand miracle. Let us analyze this story through the lenses of history, science, and logic.
1. The Historical Deception: Tabrizi vs. Sabzwari
Viewed through the mirror of history, the shrine in Multan does not belong to Shah Shams Tabrizi at all.
Shams Tabrizi: He was the world-renowned mentor of Maulana Rumi, whose life was centered in Konya (modern-day Turkey). Authentic historical records provide no evidence of him ever visiting Multan.
Shams Sabzwari: The shrine in Multan actually belongs to Shah Shams Sabzwari, an Ismaili missionary who came from Sabzevar, Iran.
The Analysis: Custodians took advantage of the name "Shams" to market an Ismaili figure as the famous Sufi (Tabrizi) to capture a larger "market" of mainstream devotees.
2. The Legend of the "Lowered Sun" in the Court of Science
The legend claims that the saint beckoned the Sun, which descended to roast his piece of meat. Modern science classifies this claim as "Cosmic Suicide."
The Scale Disparity: The Sun's diameter is 109 times larger than Earth’s. A scientific fact: 1.3 million Earths can fit inside the Sun. It defies logic to suggest that a celestial body millions of times larger than Earth could "land" on a tiny plot of land in Multan.
The Horror of Temperature: The surface temperature of the Sun is 5,500°C. If the Sun moved even 1% closer than its current distance (150 million km), every living soul on Earth would evaporate into steam in a fraction of a second. The Sun descending to a "spear’s length" means the instantaneous annihilation of the Solar System, not the roasting of meat.
Gravitational Collapse: The Sun’s gravity is 28 times stronger than Earth's. Had the Sun approached, it would not have "descended"; it would have swallowed the Earth like a tiny pebble, ending all life and planetary orbits.
3. Purposefulness vs. Disrespect to the Saint
According to the Quran and Sunnah, the Sun and Moon follow fixed orbits by Divine Decree and will not deviate until the Day of Judgment.
Moving a massive cosmic entity out of its orbit is no small matter. Does it befit the dignity of a saint to jeopardize all of humanity and turn the Earth into a ball of fire merely to satisfy a personal, trivial need like roasting meat? This story is actually a degradation of the saint, portraying him as someone lacking the patience to wait for a meal.
4. Shrine Economy and Public Manipulation
The extreme heat of Multan is a geographical reality (due to its proximity to deserts and distance from the sea). However, it has been rebranded through this "fake product" to:
Create a mix of fear and blind devotion among pilgrims.
Increase the revenue and offerings (Nazrana) at the shrine.
Keep the masses entangled in superstition, distancing them from scientific awareness and the true essence of Deen (Quran and Sunnah).
Conclusion
Science, logic, and authentic history unanimously reject this fable. The shrine in Multan does not belong to Shams Tabrizi, and the Sun never descended to roast meat. This is "counterfeit goods" sold in the name of religion. We must educate our nation about the reality of these fake products to lead them back toward pure Monotheism (Tawheed) and sound reason.
