Faith vs. Fortune: The Legacy and the Reality Gap
In this dark scenario, we must remember the legacy of those principled individuals who chose Self-Respect (Izzat/Dignity) over wealth. Today, when media persons are earning 50 to 80 lakh per month, the question arises: how many morally corrupt individuals have infiltrated this profession?
For me, earning an income through Haram (unlawful) means is meaningless, because Faith (Emaan) is my most precious asset. This is the lesson I learned from my family. My late father, who was the Editor of Daily Karnama, an Advocate, and Chairman of the Pakistan Art Lovers Council, still worked as a Chief Accountant at a cotton factory to ensure his livelihood was Halal (lawful). Similarly, my great-grandfather on my maternal side, who was a Tehsildar in Lahore before the creation of Pakistan, pursued journalism at Daily Paisa and Daily Zamindar as a part-time worship, solely to protect himself from a Haram morsel.
These historical examples serve as a powerful slap across the face of today’s wealth-worshipping mafia.
Eradication and the Path to Restoration
Journalism can only be restored when every member of this profession considers 'Faith' their most valuable asset and rejects Haram income as meaningless. The survival of true journalism in Pakistan is only possible when these Black Sheep are eradicated. For this to happen, journalistic organizations must initiate the process of self-accountability, and the public must be educated to distinguish between truth and falsehood.
Cleansing is essential for the restoration of true freedom and the sanctity of journalism.
